Patrick Sharp hasn’t drawn blood since May. This entire Stanley Cup Playoff has seen little action from Number 10. He has yet to showcase the skills that won him the moniker “Shooter.”
In Game 4 tonight, he had 2 shots on goal and a great assist to Jonathan Toews to open up the Blackhawks scoring in the 2nd period. He’s done well, but we’re used to more; especially for someone who usually puts up more assists, more shots, and a healthy amount of goals. What’s happening?
Watching him play, Sharp has opportunities to crash the net, but decides against it. At the point on power plays, he winds up then passes off to a teammate. The shots he does make don’t have that sharpness to them. They don’t have those jet afterburners.
With Toews, Kane, Keith, Hossa, and Seabrook (veteran Hawks) all contributing in their own way, it’s time for Sharp to step up to the plate and add to this 2015 playoff series. He needs to. It’s his turn. With Tampa Bay fighting well defensively and pushing the forecheck, they’re making it difficult for Chicago. Crawford’s stellar performance requires him to breath with a scoring lead. The shooters need to shoot, and Sharp needs to earn his keep.
Looking back to November of last year, Sharp sustained a lower-body injury. When he returned after 3 weeks, he just didn’t play the same. He’s been playing and has been healthy, though his mental game seems to get the better of him.
Whatever the case, I want him to score. I wear a shirt with his name on it. Go Sharpie.
