“Write like an athlete.” That’s the maxim I live out because, in a way, to be a great writer, one has to write like an athlete. Athletes don’t wait around to get motivated to go train. They do it.
In the same way athletes build endurance, muscle, and skill, writers can apply those same techniques to their muscle; the most important one – the brain. Discipline and focus are the tools I use to make progress. Taking this attitude has increased the daily writing quotient immensely.
It has also allowed me to take a much more objective approach with my words. They’re not precious anymore. Anything can be changed so that it improves the overall concept in order to “win the game” or write a satisfying chapter.
So, write like an athlete, not like an artist.
