Finding the different dynamics within an interaction between characters. Play up the drama and the conflict. Maximizing the scene means finding those moments that best exemplify the conflict and the theme. If it’s supposed to be calm, play up the calm. If it’s supposed to be chaotic, add as many things to make it as chaotic as possible. The metaphor I use whenever I’m rewriting is if I’m “ringing out the sponge.” Am I squeezing as much water out of this thing as possible? Am I really mining deep enough to get the gold?
