Is it wise to have a regimented rewriting process? I tinkered with a process: read the chapter, write a summary, highlight the goal, and ask “Do I really need X?” I tried doing this today, but the contrarian in me rebels against my own idea, not wanting to be chained down. I really do think I will need to do this though. I already do this, but not in a regimented way. It just seems so… monotonous. It just seems like… work. There is also the method where you take different passes at the chapter. Character, dialogue, prose, etc. But that seems like… work. I like the free-form approach where I’m working the prose, massaging the details, one section at a time. That seems to work for me. It’s worked before. A little self-analysis: I think it’s a result of not feeling productive enough. The work is slow, and I think I could do more. So what happens is that I re-examine my process if I could speed up the production. You know what? Slow and steady. And that’s okay.
